Today, we sit down for an interview with Leila from Ocean Bloom, the Cork brand behind the natural seaweed-based skincare products.
How long has your business been in operation?
Ocean Bloom first began trading in March 2015 after finding success with easing a family member’s baby eczema.
Who is the team behind Ocean Bloom?
The Ocean Bloom Team consists of me – Leila, my husband Cormac, and my aunt – Cheryl, the founder of Ocean Bloom. I do a majority of the day to day running, and Cheryl is always at the end of the phone for help and guidance.
What inspired you to set up your business that was focused on Seaweed Skincare?
After a family member was born with infant eczema, Cheryl set out to help him by harnessing the power of our local Seaweed. After completing a course with the BIM and travelling the country gaining knowledge, our range of products was created.
What was your mission at the outset?
Helping people with skin conditions has always been our goal here at Ocean Bloom. I myself suffer from Psoriatic Arthritis and am well aware of the stress and pain skin conditions can cause. If our seaweed based skincare products can ease these ailments and make our customers feel better, that’s what matters most.
What type of product(s) do you sell/ produce?
We mainly produce face products such as moisturiser, eye cream, etc. But we also sell seaweed baths and Seaweed oil blends for use all over the body.
To what do you attribute your success?
Our customers are the reason for our success. All of our reviews were earned, every review on our website is from a verified customer, and word of mouth is the best advertising tool.
What is unique about your business?
I think what really makes us unique is that we are a family business; if you email Ocean Bloom, you are emailing me directly. I am always at the end of the phone for my customers.
How does your business help the customer/community?
I am always sharing local business news and my local purchases across my social media pages to help our community. I’m a big believer that everyone can help local businesses without spending, liking, and sharing is a massive help.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned so far from setting up your business?
It is hard working for yourself, but when you meet your customers, and they tell you how your product worked for them, it is worthwhile.
Has your business set any sustainability policies? If so, would you care to share them?
Over the last few years, I have been moving towards readily recyclable packaging such as glass and Aluminum. We have also recently teamed up with One Tree Planted, an amazing organisation that plants saplings worldwide; for every order placed on our website, a tree is planted by One Tree Planted.

Do you have any final thoughts you would like to share?
At Ocean Bloom, we really do try and cater to everyone with all skin types. We have fragrance free ranges, vegan ranges, and all of our products are cruelty free, SLS free, Paraben Free petrochemical and mineral oil-free, and DEA Free.
